Transport by air is evolving fast to take on as many operations as possible. Big airports trigger bustling economic activity in their environment.
In recent years Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea (AENA), the public institution in charge of Spanish airports, has been creating new infrastructure and enlarging and modernising existing infrastructure. In 2007, air traffic increased in Spain by more than 8%.
FCC Construcción has been a party to a great number of highly complex airport jobs, such as the passenger terminal at El Prat Airport in Barcelona, a landmark project built for the 1992 Olympic Games; the terminal building and car park at Palma de Mallorca, which boasts 250,000 m2 of floor area and its car park; the third runway at Madrid Barajas, 4,440 metres long and built in 18 months; and the new T4 terminal building at Madrid Barajas, which won the Puente de Alcántara International Award.
