Tunnels

The tunnel solution is frequently necessitated by high-speed and metropolitan railway layouts, high-capacity urban and intercity highways and optimisation of the layout for such infrastructure. Likewise, water supply systems, mining and power networks clamour for underground solutions that are possible today thanks to the use of powerful tunnelling machines that can dig full tunnel sections and work alongside traditional construction procedures.

FCC Construcción possesses thorough experience in building underground infrastructure. It has constructed over 300??km of different types of tunnels, for roads, railways, metropolitan railways and water supply lines.

It owns the machinery to tackle jobs of any size, such as Tizona, the biggest tunnel-boring machine in the world, which was used to build the M30 tunnels. Measuring over 175 metres in length and weighing in at over 4,200 tons, Tizona can develop a thrust of 31,700 tons and bore 24 metres of 15.2-metre-diameter tunnel daily.
