FCC wins the contract for the El Baix de Llobregat Intermodal Transfer Facility

The contract is worth 70 million euro

Transfer Facility

The Catalonian regional Department of Land Policy and Public Works has awarded the contract to build the El Baix de Llobregat Intermodal Transfer Facility to a joint venture featuring FCC, through publicly owned firm GISA.

The work, which will begin in the first half of 2011, has a three-year completion period and will be jointly financed with ERDF funds.

The project's objective is to make this intermodal transfer facility one of the main public transport hubs of the metropolitan Barcelona region.

During the execution period, work will be done in a way that is compatible with normal railway service, and travellers' mobility needs will not be affected.

The new facilities will facilitate connections between the AVE high-speed railway line, regular local and regional trains, the railway system's link to Barcelona Airport, the metro system (L1, L2 and L9) and collective road transport via roads C-31 and C-32. It is estimated that the new 47,000-square-metre intermodal transfer facility will serve 17 million travellers in the year 2025.

The station is elliptical in shape and stands 21 metres tall. It has been designed as a single airy environment, into which daylight shines through a glass façade and a skylight 30 metres in diameter in the centre of the roof. The facility will be fit for use by people of reduced mobility, because it will be equipped with ramps, escalators and 16 lifts.

A car park for private vehicles will also be built, capable of holding 604 automobiles, 122 motorcycles and 180 bicycles. Furthermore, to favour access by road, there will be a bus and taxi docking area with the capacity for eight bus stops and 25 taxi spaces, plus 14 short-term parking spaces for private vehicles, three emergency stopping spaces, 113 parking spaces for motorcycles and 40 parking spaces for bicycles.
