At the water’s edge
The Hotel Balneario Las Arenas is a spa hotel located in a rectangular block skirted by Avenida Eugenia Viñea, Avenida de Neptuno, the boardwalk and Las Arenas Beach in the city of Valencia. In its day it was one of Valencia's best-beloved landmarks, the Hotel Las Arenas-Baños de Ola.
The design, which was done by the firm of Nebot, Alfaro and Amorrortu, seeks to recapture the splendour of yesteryear. On the basis of the architectural model provided by the old spa pavilions, work is being done to rebuild what was left standing.
The complex is structured into four well-differentiated zones: the hotel zone, the events zone, the athletic and spa zone and the garden zone.
The hotel zone holds a new nine-level building made up of three modules arranged in a U-shape whose arms open toward the beach.
The events zone has got twin rectangular buildings. One of them, which is a survivor from the past and a protected Valencia City Heritage building, has been fully refurbished. The other has been built to be identical, as a replacement for the original twin that was destroyed by bombing in 1938.
These buildings house multi-purpose rooms, an auditorium seating 600 spectators and rooms capable of holding 1,000 people.
The athletic and spa zone is arranged around a fully refurbished central building raised in the early 30's by Gutiérrez Soto, who won many awards in his day. It has been recreated down to the last detail in complete faithfulness to the spirit of its architect. The building surrounds a 600-m2 swimming pool. There is a roofed area containing the spa and gymnasium and an open area housing a great patio, a children's swimming pool and an outdoor spa area surrounded by gardens.
The hotel's buildings are tastefully set on a landscaped lot measuring over 20,000 m2, home to the original spa's collection of plants (palm trees, tamarinds, jacarandas, etc.), which is now over 100 years old.
